Ways to save money when ordering your prescription

Prescriptions are free to everyone living in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. In England, prescriptions for gluten free food are paid for unless patients qualify for free prescriptions. However, the majority of people receiving gluten free foods on prescription do not pay prescription charges.

Paying patients usually need to pay one prescription charge for each item on each prescription. If you order three of the same item, you will only pay for one prescription, but if you order three different products you will have to pay for three prescriptions.

The prescription charge in England is £8.05, as of 1 April 2015.

If you do pay for prescriptions then you may be able to save money by purchasing a pre-payment certificate (PPC) which allows payment of a fixed fee for either 3 months (£29.10) or 12 months (£104).

A PPC covers all NHS prescription costs, no matter how many are needed, or for what.

A 3 monthly PPC saves money if a you need 4 or more items in 3 months.

A 12-month certificate saves money if  13 or more items are needed in 12 months.

As a coeliac patient you are entitled to receive between 11-22 units of gluten free units on prescription per month, depending on your age and gender.
